General Information
Freie Universität Berlin and St.Petersburg State University are glad to announce the continuation of the Double degree Master Program ‘Global Communication and International Journalism’ in September 2016.
The program is conducted by the School of Journalism and Mass Communication, SPbU, and Institute for Media and Communication Studies, Freie Universität.
The program aims at providing advanced-level higher education in the area of mass communication and journalism. The students will get a double-competency qualification based on academic studies and practical training. The study process takes place in St.Petersburg, Russia, and Berlin, Germany (for study structure, please see “Curriculum”). Graduates of the program can work as international journalists, media editors, media managers, or media researchers all over the world.
Special focus of the program is national media systems and journalism in times of globalized and networked communication. Transnational perspective for both theory of communication and reporting practices is supported by studies and internships in the two European capitals – Berlin and ‘the Northern capital of Russia’, St.Petersburg.
Partner Universities
Freie Universität Berlin is one the two biggest universities in Berlin. Freie Universität Berlin is one of only eleven the ‘excellence universities’ in Germany. In 2013 and 2014 it was ranked by QS as the best German university in the field of communication science. Its website is here .
St.Petersburg State University, or SPbU, is the oldest but the most modernized one. It is also one of the two universities in Russia financed directly from the state budget and has a right to establish its own Standard of Study. Its website is here. In 2015, SPbU was ranked within Top 70-80 of the world universities by its reputation.
Both universities have Institutes of journalism and communication studies, where the program actually takes place. In SPbU, it is Institute 'School of Journalism and Mass Communications'. In Berlin, it is the Institute for Media and Communication Studies. Each of these Institutes has a history over 60 years and is very well known within the professional community.
Core competencies you gain
Knowledge of the global media market, as well as those of Germany and Russia in particular;
Theoretical knowledge on global communication process;
Understanding of journalism in social and political context;
Journalistic skills (writing, narration, multimedia production, editing);
Media analysis, media research and research methods;
Basic knowledge on media production and editorial management.
Places available
There are 20 places available on the program. Among them there are:
5 free-of-charge places for Russian residents;
10 free-of-charge places for non-Russian residents;
5 commercial places at the price pre-fixed by the inter-university Agreement (3 for Russian residents and 2 for non-Russian residents), where the student pays for the Russian semesters only.
